The will to teach cannot be reduced to pay; just as inspirational teaching and a teacher’s role in school cannot be reduced to a tick-box list of competencies.

Mrs Hoodless described a pupil at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School who decided she wanted to go to university as a result of being tutored by a City University physics student. Mrs Hoodless could have gone on to say that the present headteacher at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson applied to teach because of her experience as a Community Service Volunteer at St Gregory’s School in Kirkby in 1969 during her gap year.
