CHARIS PROJECT. Charis Science 11-14. The Stapleford Centre pound;18.95. Available from The Stapleford Centre, The Old Lace Mill, Frederick Road, Stapleford, Nottingham NG9 8FN. TES Direct pound;17.95

This photocopiable pack of activities and teacher’s notes addresses some of the issues that were raised by the Office for Standards in Education(1994) discussion paper on spiritual, moral, social and cultural development at key stage 3.

The Charis project adopts a Christian point of view, though this is not especially overt. It also aims to support teachers with the Ideas and Evidence section of Scientific Enquiry and to ensure that units can be slotted into existing schemes of work.

Many of these materials are excellent - but you should treat them with caution and should discuss with your colleagues whether everything is appropriate for use with your students.

Nigel Collins is head of biology at King Charles I School, Kidderminster and edits Catalyst, GCSE Science Review
