WOMEN outnumber men by almost three to one in Welsh classrooms, early findings from Wales’s first official register of teachers show.

Of 38,230 teachers registered with the General Teaching Council for Wales, preliminary figures list only 10,734 males, in comparison with 27,496 females. The gap is even wider in primary schools, where there are almost five times as many women teachers employed as men.
