The bullying of teachers by senior colleagues is on the increase in Scottish schools, according to a union survey.
The Educational Institute of Scotland, the biggest union north of the border, reports that it dealt with 200 incidents over the past year, but that this was just the “tip of the iceberg”. Many teachers are too frightened to report bullying in case it ruins their careers.
Ronnie Smith, the union’s general secretary, has said that the “insidious scourge” of workplace bullying was as endemic as the playground variety. Staff on temporary contracts tended to be particularly vulnerable.
He called on Scotland’s 32 local authorities to prioritise the issue and has urged all victims to report incidents to the EIS.
