University admissions tutors accepted a larger percentage of students with “applied” A-levels in 1995 than the previous year.
A report to be published next month by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service shows 59 per cent of applicants with general national vocational qualifications got a higher education place, compared with 54 per cent in 1994. Applications from such students rose ten-fold during that time, broadly mirroring the numbers taking courses. The first advanced GNVQs were only awarded two years ago.
