It is clear that FErret hasn’t managed to catch a mouse recently (“When a library isn’t”, FE Focus, September 12). Otherwise he would realise that a library can just as easily be a web portal or a knowledge management system as an open space filled with books.

Whichever of these it is, a library still requires effective management by trained information professionals.

A large room furnished with desks and a whiteboard is not a classroom; what makes it effective is the intervention of the teacher. Why should a library be any different?
