MEI STRUCTURED MATHEMATICS MECHANICS 3. By John Berry et al. - 0 340 57862 9. Pounds 7.99. Hodder Stoughton

This is the most recent contribution to the popular A-level series from the Mathematics in Education and Industry team. The complete series is designed to allow students to prepare for a variety of A or AS certificates provided by the Oxford and Cambridge Schools Examination Board, including Statistics and Further Mathematics. This flexible modular scheme is based on credit accumulation. Each text covers the material for at least one component, which is designed to involve about 45 hours of studentteacher contact.

Mechanics 3 completes the basic mechanics course with chapters on circular motion, elasticity and simple harmonic motion. Calculus methods are applied to volumes of revolution and centres of mass. The book concludes with a welcome introduction to the often neglected key ideas of dimensional analysis. Modelling of real situations continues from previous texts as a core theme. Illustrations of apparatus, photographs and practical suggestions for simple experiments all help to give the impression of mechanics as a lively subject with exciting and powerful tools.

This volume will further whet the appetite of many teachers who await the day in 1996 when all the 23 MEI component modules are covered by books in print.
