Nikki Birch has been appointed as vice-principal of deep learning at the Manchester Enterprise Academy, while Teresa Johnson has been appointed vice-principal of the extended academy and community.

Mrs Birch was head of sixth form at Dame Elizabeth Cadbury Technology College in Birmingham and deputy head at Stourport High School and Sixth Form Centre in Worcestershire. She was most recently a consultant deputy head, training other deputies in Worcestershire about the curriculum and timetabling.

Ms Johnson is a former deputy head at Barr’s Hill School and Community College in Coventry, where she developed Barr’s Hill as a full-service extended school and worked with the local authority to help extend all schools in the area.

Dorothea Hackman has joined the Royal London Society for the Blind in the new role of director of education.

Ms Hackman is a former assistant principal at Hackney Community College and is chair of Great Ormond Street Hospital Patients’ Forum. She has a wide knowledge of working with marginalised groups.

Her new job is to provide leadership to all educational provision for the society at its campus in Sevenoaks, Kent.

David Walker has become the director of programme and public policy at Career Academies UK, which provides business networks and experiences for young people aged 16-19.

Mr Walker qualified as a barrister and spent four years as a law lecturer before moving into public policy. He has shaped policy for organisations both in the private and voluntary sectors, including the CBI, the business lobby organisation, where he covered education, children’s services and criminal justice.

Malcolm Newsam has become the interim director of children, education and families at Thurrock Council. The move follows the announcement that Rob McCulloch-Graham is leaving to go to Barnet in north-west London as director of children’s services. Mr McCulloch-Graham has had a long career in local government, including five years at Bedfordshire County Council, where he was director of children’s services until the county’s demise in March this year. He also has managerial experience at the Audit Commission, and at Derby City and Derbyshire County councils.

Neil Roskilly has been appointed chief executive officer of the Independent Schools Association. Educated at University College London and Exeter University. Mr Roskilly started teaching geography at Hurstpierpoint College, West Sussex. He was head of geography at Sherbourne and Wellington schools, before becoming deputy head at Aldenham and at Aiglon in Switzerland. Since 2005 he has been principal of the Cambridge Centre for Sixth-form Studies.

GLORIA UNDERHILL

After 23 years of service, Gloria Underhill, 66, is leaving her catering position at Maundene School in Chatham, Kent. She will retire to Northumberland after serving nearly 700,000 school dinners.

As her job has changed over the years, she has had an increasing amount of contact with the pupils she has fed.

“I’ve been able to see lots of kids grow up, from being the little ones in reception to when they leave for big school,” she said.

The school arranged a surprise farewell assembly for her.
