Moving up in Glasgow, but too late for some;Jotter

The expansionist National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (page six) is on the move from its West George Street bolt-hole in Glasgow to plusher accommodation at Nelson Mandela Place.

Few will regret the transfer, including a past UK president who declined to haul his substantial figure up four flights and called the lift. The antiquated building (also the Glasgow home of the Educational Institute of Scotland) retained its lift attendant, an elderly cynic.

Munching away at his midday snack, he jammed the lift between floors and curtly advised the president to take some exercise. He refused and rang again to be met with a quaint Glaswegian riposte: "**** off ya deaf **, I'm having ma lunch."
