Murder treated as ‘accident’

ARGENTINA: Lawmakers propose lowering the age of criminal responsibility following the classroom killing of a private-school teacher by one of her pupils.

Maritza Prezzoli was stabbed last month by a 15-year-old boy who had to sit exams for subjects he had failed during the year.

The boy, from a middle-class family apparently without any problems, had been told by his father that hecould not visit his grandfather for the holidays if he did not pass his end-of-year “recovery” exams.

The school has denied responsibility for the incident. Its lawyers are presenting the killing as an “industrial accident”.

Several days later, in the gritty working-class town of Wilde just outside the capital, a 14-year-old boy stabbed a female teacher. Frank Nowikowski
