AGREEMENT was reached last week between the education authorities and unions representing Scotland’s 700 music instructors on a 10 per cent pay rise backdated to April.
This will make it difficult to avoid offering the same deal to psychologists and educational advisers who have also rejected an interim 3 per cent increase. But authorities are still keen to break the historic salary link with teachers.
Part of the agreement with the instructors involves setting up a working party to look at their “discrete” pay and conditions. In return, there is a deal not to take a case to an employment tribunal to establish a contractual link with teachers’ pay.
The two sides in the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers have also agreed to set up a working group to examine pay and conditions of advisers and psychologists.
