A feel for fashion

With London Fashion Week starting today, now is the time to see whether your pupils can tell a basque from a bolero.

The Fashion and Textile Museum is running a competition for aspiring designers called My Fashion Look. Under-12s are tasked to create their favourite outfit for springsummer 2012. The designs - complete with hair, make-up and accessories - can be expressed in any art form but should be accompanied with a lookbook (a set of marketing photographs), so that pupils follow the planning processes of real fashion designers. Entry forms are available online and the closing date is 5 March. The winner’s work will be displayed at the museum from 30 March to 16 June. Places can be booked by telephone (020 7407 8664) or by email info@ftmlondon.org).

What else?

The museum will host an exhibition celebrating the female designers of the 1950s and 1960s, who transformed the plain styles of wartime with original and abstract fashion designs. Designing Women: Post-War British Textiles focuses on Lucienne Day, Jacqueline Groag and Marian Mahler and opens on 16 March.

Introduce fashion photography with Vogue Through the Ages, see Sarah Beaumont’s inspiring worksheets and PowerPoints, or try missholcombe’s textiles resources for a design mini-project.
