Talking without speaking
Build communication bridges between deaf and hearing pupils with the National Deaf Children’s Society’s free Look Smile Chat resource pack.
What is it?
Posters encourage pupils to communicate in ways other than speaking, such as texting and photography.
Two comprehensive lesson plans include suggested film clips (available on the enclosed DVD), quizzes and discussion tasks that explore different forms of communication and the problems that deaf people can encounter.
Handouts and activities include a guide to British Sign Language and a film-making task.
Why is it useful?
The pack is fantastic for helping pupils understand how an inability to hear affects daily life. It will make them better communicators and also help deaf pupils to feel more confident, creating a more inclusive environment. For a free pack, go to www.ndcs.org.uk.
