Food technology

Ages 11-14

To inspire pupils into cooking, get them to make a simple tomato sauce with the addition of a wide range of herbs and garlic. Introduce each herb allowing every pupil to touch and smell. Give everyone some chopped tomatoes in a saucepan on medium heat and let them add their own herbs to flavour the sauce. Tasting will be enjoyed in the plenary.

Pupils will love the lesson, be inspired into making their pasta sauces and you can even run it like a Gordon Ramsay-style restaurant when getting them to do the washing up.

Liana Peck teaches at Holgate school in Barnsley.
