Books

Books have always been important to me. Both my parents had a high regard for reading and education, and encouraged me always to have a book on the go. The McDonald Road public library by Leith Walk was my second home; I cried for Black Beauty, admired Little Women and wanted to be Anne of Green Gables. Today I relax with some of the excellent Scottish writers that produce high-quality crime fiction. I love Denise Mina, and have just read and enjoyed The Hanging Shed by Gordon Ferris - Kilmarnock in 1945 faithfully re-created. I also enjoy the poetry of Alan Spence.

TVradio

My current must-see television - reflecting my interest in genealogy - is Who do You Think You Are? I am fascinated by the stories of chances taken and opportunities missed. I also loved The Good Wife from the US - intelligent, political and great stories. I love Radio 4 and listen to it often, particularly when driving. Sunday mornings are Broadcasting House, then an omnibus of The Archers (one of these days I’ll work out all the relationships), then I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and Desert Island Discs. That, a cup of coffee and a croissant - what more could I want?

Music

My music of choice is pretty unsophisticated. My father was a singer and Saturday nights when I was young were for sing-songs with family and friends. As a result I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of obscure tunes and lyrics from the Forties and Fifties. I still listen to the songs of my youth, and loved seeing Paul McCartney and Neil Diamond when they performed at Hampden recently. I’m also looking forward very much to the release of an album by our wonderfully-talented CPD team member Kat Healey. A great Christmas gift!
