Music

Be it in the gym, on the way to university, or spending the night writing essays and reading textbooks, I always listen to music. I have an eclectic taste but my passion is hip hop. I love the social message within hip hop that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can be as successful as you want. Rappers often talk about social issues in a way that speaks to the younger generation. I especially like Kanye West, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar.

Books

I recently got rid of the television in my bedroom because I spend so much time reading now - mostly books on education, but I enjoy Falkirk author Alan Bissett (above). He grew up in the same area as I did, so his books speak to me. He was also briefly a teacher. Through university I’ve discovered the works of Ken Robinson and find them extremely thought- provoking.

TV

I struggle to squeeze television into my busy schedule but I like to spoil myself with Bear Grylls (above). I find his approach to everything he does so admirable - not to mention that he makes me laugh. He has a great attitude and never gives up. I enjoy documentaries on nature and history, especially ancient Egypt, and comedies that embrace Scottish humour, like Rab C. Nesbitt and Still Game.

Film

I don’t watch as many films as I’d like to but when I do, I prefer them to contain a message. I really like films by John Singleton, like Higher Learning. They fit in with hip hop and show the struggles that many young African-Americans face in the streets as well as in education, and often come with a powerful message. I also love anything with Will Smith, as he’s been my favourite actor since I was a child.
