Fellow union leaders beware! Mary Bousted, the incoming general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, has expansionist tendencies.
She has already rejected predecessor Peter Smith’s old office (described by a union spokeswoman as “tiny”, and taken over the larger office next door once occupied by Mr Smith’s secretarial support.
The office is also being redecorated, although the union denies any Lord Irvine-style refit. “It’s just a lick of paint. Mary will come in and live like the rest of us. We live very well but modestly,” said the spokeswoman.
