I was amused by your Jotter report (TESS, January 31) of the P4 pupil who thought that INRI on a crucifix stood for “I’m Nailed Right In”.

Unfortunately, your own “as every schoolboy knows” translation is incorrect. Not only would “In Nomine Rex Iudaeorum” be bad Latin, if you look at John 19.19 you will see that INRI stands for “Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews” (in Latin, of course).
