The awards are supported by the British Nutrition Foundation, Sainsbury’s and the Design and Technology Association. The Department for Education and Employment has welcomed the scheme as an initiative to support and enhance pupils’ practical food work as part of the formal curriculum.
The winners were Leanne Jarvis and Katie Richies from Tolworth girls’ school, Surrey, and Simon Beaumont, Lauren Rowley and Thomas Shurmer from Connahs Quay high school, Wales. Food technology teachers Mary Richmond of Connahs Quay high school and Pam Kelly of Tolworth girls’ school prased the work achieved in lessons and the suppport of the awards scheme.
Taste of Success has three elements. First, the Food Award Scheme is for pupils aged nine to 14 years at bronze, silver and gold levels of attainment and recognises pupil achievement within the national curriculum.
Second, online resources at www.j-sainsbury.co.ukpartnershipseducation provide support for pupils studying food technology at key stage 3. Each case study contains information and photographs on the stages involved in developing a product, from concept through to the in-store launch. Teacher notes are available and ideas for practical activities.
Third, the case studies also form part of regional teacher training sessions offered by Sainsbury’s in conjunction with DATA.
