Already, there has been a rush to judgment. Teachers' leader Nigel de Gruchy described her appearance on Channel 4's show as "inadvisable" while, even before her debut, her headteacher had warnedthat any lewd behaviour could result in dismissal. As Penny allegedly told friends she was willing to have sex on the show in order to scoop the pound;70,000 prize, her future performance will be closely scrutinised.
Having agreed to let her appear, the school is entitled to feel let down by her behaviour. Even an apparently excellent teacher was always bound to be judged more harshly than contestants from other professions.
