The naked teacher

Never mind the election: where do you stand on the really big issue of the day? Should Lisa Ellis - Penny in the Big Brother house - be sacked or not? Does appearing naked on live TV in front of millions of viewers make her unfit to teach?

Already, there has been a rush to judgment. Teachers' leader Nigel de Gruchy described her appearance on Channel 4's show as "inadvisable" while, even before her debut, her headteacher had warnedthat any lewd behaviour could result in dismissal. As Penny allegedly told friends she was willing to have sex on the show in order to scoop the pound;70,000 prize, her future performance will be closely scrutinised.

Having agreed to let her appear, the school is entitled to feel let down by her behaviour. Even an apparently excellent teacher was always bound to be judged more harshly than contestants from other professions.
