I wish Gareth Calway, the retired teacher turned comic (TES, July 27), the very best for his retirement and hope he is well received at the Edinburgh Fringe. But I would like to advise him that if he were to include his true life story tapped for comic potential about the teenage boy called Micheal, who had “a spelling mistake for a name”, he might meet with stony silence in a land that is fond of its Gaelic heritage. Micheal, the name of one of the archangels, is very popular in Ireland.

Good luck, Gareth, but while teaching in England you missed a chance to learn about this lad’s cultural background. Save yourself embarrassment on stage and drop this part from your act.
