Glasgow University’s staff and students at the Crichton have stepped up the pressure on Sir Muir Russell, the principal, who delivered a lecture on campus about the future of higher education in Scotland. A group statement condemned Sir Muir for references to universities as “businesses”, staff as “costs” and students as “customers”. In his TESS column, Michael Russell, an SNP candidate in the area, attacked a “bean counter’s speech” (p24).
