TWELVE local authorities will take part in a pilot scheme to allow parents to have their children named in a 20-minute civic ceremony, as an alternative to a church christening.

Parents will declare their “support, lov and care” for their child. The scheme is in line with the Government’s Green Paper on the family which says it will give unmarried couples a chance to commit themselves to joint responsibilities for their child.
