Natfhe is recruiting new members almost twice as fast as last year

The mood was one of defiance as lecturers' union NATFHE held its conference in Scarborough. Francis Beckett reports

* Natfhe is recruiting new members almost twice as fast as last year. It received 4,600 applications in the first five months of 2001; the equivalent fiure last year was 2,552.

At the beginning of the year they were coming in at the rate of 750 a month, against 534 a month last year. But the rate increased in May, when several people joined because of the strike, manyof them signing up on the picket lines.
