* Government plans for a new national centre of excellence in English teaching have been shelved, because of lack of funding, according to Mr Johnson, chair of NATE.

A pound;50 million national centre of excellence in science teaching, whose cost is being split by the Government and the Wellcome Trust, has been announced. There are also plans for a national maths centre.
