Birmingham’s University of the First Age looks set to go national, with the help of a pound;400,000 grant from the Department for Education and Employment.

The UFA, launched in January 1996, works with schools and communities to run a range of out-of-school learning programmes for secondary-age pupils. This year, 15,000 children from 36 Birmingham schools were involved.
