The Nuffield inquiry is to be chaired by Trevor McDonald, the ITN newscaster. It will study “the UK’s needs in terms of capability in languages over the next 20 years”.
The Nuffield Foundation said in a statement: “Currently more people than ever before are learning languages, from primary school through to lifelong learning, but there seems to be insufficient clarity of vision of shared strategic thinking about the future.
“Present arrangements leave many of even the most able and successful of our citizens ill equipped to operate in any language other than English.”
