Need for a fluid use of setting

JULIEN Kramer (TES, April 4) clearly hasn’t taught maths in the “old” secondary modern versus grammar school system.

I work in a very successful comprehensive in a grammar school town and am happy to report that setting works for many of our pupils, including some at the bottom.

Surely Mr Kramer isn’t so short-sighted as to see that this is not a black and white issue? We cannot “blanket cover” all of our pupils in the one system. We must develop more of a sense of the individual within the wider teaching environment, be it set, streamed or mixed ability.

Local circumstances dictate far more than any piece of wisdom descended from on high. Our situation is determined by year on year analysis; we will do what we believe is best for our pupils.
