Needs ‘map’ for Higher Still

Higher Still’s proposals fo special educational needs have re-emerged as another consultation document on “access provision”. Students affected are at or leading up to a level comparable to Standard grade Foundation courses.

Access to the Higher Still curriculum will be structured in three bands, the upper band 3 leading to Intermediate I level (although band 3 is also geared to fifth-year Christmas leavers or adult returners who may want an introductory taster to a subject).

Students with complex learning problems will have their needs assessed in a “map of achievement”. The document adds that “progress will include the application of existing skills to new contexts, the acquisition of more complex skills and diminishing levels of tutor support”.
