Your report “Super schools ‘harm pupils’” (TES, October 27) was timely and welcome. The growth in secondary school size should be of concern to us all. We need to put the breaks on and ask if big is best, or if small might be better still. The irony is that while many big firms have found imaginative ways of scaling down, schools are getting bigger by the day.
But you are wrong on one point. Human Scale education does not believe the Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme has contributed to the trend towards bigger schools. On the contrary, we know from first-hand experience that the scheme provides a fantastic opportunity for large secondaries to think again about new and exciting ways of adopting human-scale principles and practices.
