UK schools will be able to join a cut-price volunteer project to link their schools to the Internet when UK NetDay is launched next term.

In the United States, where NetDay has been running for the past few years, thousands of schools have been connected. Schools raise money with sponsors to buy cost-price connection kits, then volunteers install the wiring. Florida, for example, is using the scheme to connect all its schools. The founding companies for the UK version are understood to be ICL, Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems and UUNet and the Daily Telegraph.

The US NetDay’s Web site is at: http:www.netday.org
