Public funding should be made available to support education for elderly residents in care homes, the University of the Third Age said this week

Ian Searle, chairman of U3A, said: "The evidence that learning something new keeps older people fitter for longer is overwhelming. But without learning opportunities, care homes can simply become places where society `parks' the elderly while they await death."
