A new exams conglomerate was launched this week by City and Guilds and two of the largest academic exam boards.

The Assessment and Qualifications Alliance links City and Guilds, the Associated Examining Board and the Northern Examinations and Assessment Board. The new board will offer GCSEs, A-levels and general national vocational qualifications. The three boards insist a full merger is not currently on the cards.

Baroness Blackstone, who launched the new body this week, is known to want a rationalisation of awarding bodies to encourage a broader range of studies for all 14 to 19-year-olds.
