THE survey is a “formidable indictment”, campaigners from the Scottish Association of Teachers of Language and Literature say. The determination to press ahead with Higher Still English was “breathtakingly irrational”.
The SQA is taking the issue seriously enough to have appointed a special working group of English teachers under Elaine Lopinska, who has been seconded from her pot as principal English teacher at Alva Academy. Its task is to look at possible streamlining of the assessment arrangements at Intermediate and Higher levels, not a radical shake-up.
Only 89 out of a possible 366 secondaries presented Higher English candidates for this year’s exam. Others have been given a year’s grace to get ready.
