A2 CHEMISTRY. By Andrew Hunt. Hodder amp; Stoughton pound;15.99.

A more traditional textbook with three main sections on Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and a comprehensive reference section at the end. But the accompanying CD-ROM (out next month from New Media, tel: 01491 413999) and website (www.a2chemistry.co.uk) make this an up-to-date package. This well-written text, illustrated throughout with copious diagrams and pictures, sets a very high standard. Both the inorganic and organic sections begin with general principles before going on to systematic group chemistry.

There are plenty of worked examples, opportunities to “Test yourself” (answers given) and each section ends with a useful study guide to aid revision.
