Anaphylaxis is the medical term for a severe allergic reaction, most familiar in the case of the 1 per cent of children for whom peanuts can be life-threatening. The New Kid is a 20-minute video in which Jack has to decide what food at a birthday party is safe to eat - even the prizes might be dangerous. He’s helped by Cyril the Squirrel, who appears from the pages of a book to offer advice, and also finds nuts a real problem. The video’s message is informative and reassuring; anaphylaxis is serious, but manageable provided you use common sense. The New Kid video is suitable for key stages 1 and 2. It costs pound;15 (incl. pamp;p) from The Anaphylaxis Campaign, PO Box 275, Farnborough, Hampshire GU14 6SX. Tel: 01252 542029; fax: 01252 377140; website: www.anaphylaxis.org.uk.
