Sir Mike Tomlinson has been named as the new chief adviser of London schools, responsible for leading an pound;80 million campaign to raise standards across the capital. The former chief inspector of schools takes up the post at London Challenge this month.
The scheme, launched in 2003, will be extended from April for three years to 2011, with similar schemes being started in Greater Manchester and the Black Country. Sir Mike said: “English and maths have to be the priority because if these skills are not up to scratch, then young people cannot access other areas of the curriculum.”
He takes over from Professor Tim Brighouse, who retired last year.
