All inspectors are dubbed Ofsted inspectors, but only about 250 HMIs are directly employed by the inspectorate.

Most inspections are carried out by teams of contracted inspectors and the final report is the responsibility of the firm. Team inspectors are paid between pound;900 and pound;1,300 fora three-day inspection. Team leaders, known as registered inspectors, are typically paid pound;3,500-pound;4,000. There are more than 3,000 active inspectors not employed by Ofsted.

Inspectors typically complete four inspections per term. In the new framework, Ofsted will be responsible for all reports and HMI will be more involved in the day-to-day inspection.
