Nicky Morgan has been sacked as education secretary as the new prime minister Theresa May has carved up the Cabinet.

Ms Morgan lasted just two years in the post, having taken up the position at the head of the Department for Education in June 2014.

The MP for Loughborough was brought in to detoxify the government’s relationship with the teaching workforce after four years of Michael Gove at the helm. He has also been sacked from his post as justice secretary.

Ms Morgan enjoyed a warm start to her tenure, emphasising the need to focus on reducing teachers’ workload.

‘Relationship soured’

But her relationship with teachers turned sour towards the end, particularly as the new assessments at primary level made their way through.

On Saturday, the NUT teaching union called for Ms Morgan to resign over the handling of this year’s Sats, in which just over half of 10 and 11-year-olds met the expected standard.

Nicky Morgan tweeted that she was disappointed to be leaving her roles as education secretary and minister for women and equalities.

Disappointed not to be continuing as Education Secretary & Min for Women & Equalities - two wonderful roles it’s been a privilege to hold
