At the conclusion of the event, Iain Smith, dean of Strathclyde University’s education faculty, was invited to make the draw in a nationwide competition for school office staff, with Hodder Gibson offering prizes of wine and flower bouquets for those unsung heroes and heroines who distribute its mailshots to the teaching staff.
The dean duly obliged - and first pulled out his own alma mater as one of four winners. As if the emergence from the prize-draw box of Stornoway’s Nicolson Institute wasn’t dubious enough, we feel duty-bound to report yet another connection: the editor of this newspaper attended the same school.
