That the expanded Assisted Places Scheme implies a vote of no confidence in state education and that the same party has been in charge of state education since 1979 are two facts that no right-thinking person could possibly conjoin. Perish the thought.

However, right-thinking people, and especially cash-strapped heads and governors, might well compare the per capita funding of state and private pupils and ask why, if the upper level is deemed necessary for some, it is not deemed necessary for all.

And, if it were, what would then be the point of the Assisted Places Scheme?
