Underperforming National Challenge secondaries will not have to accept pupils who have been excluded from other schools, under plans announced this week by the Schools Secretary. Ed Balls said that, while excluded pupils were a responsibility for all schools, he wanted “to allow schools in the most challenging circumstances to focus fully on raising results”. He also announced an extra Pounds 1 million to help gifted and talented pupils in National Challenge schools.
