‘No’ to A* grades

Barry Sheerman, chairman of the Commons children, schools and families select committee, has criticised the introduction of an A* grade for A-levels as he believes it will disadvantage pupils from poor backgrounds and benefit those from private schools. “The higher hurdles that are put in that process of coming into higher education, the more kids from less privileged backgrounds drop by the wayside or leave their studies,” he said.
