Local authorities and public-sector bodies face a pound;3 billion bill to tackle the millennium computer bug, but cannot rely on financial help from the Government, the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, said this week. The Opposition parties said that the bill could not be met out of existing budgets and urged the Treasury to use contingency funds to prevent cuts to services.
