I SEE Edinburgh has appointed a new director of education. I hope that in Manchester, where he has been for 10 years, he has not permitted the nonsense that Edinburgh took over from the former Lothian region of sending children home halfway through every Friday. And I hope he has the determination to end the practice.

Does the Government know that a sizeable number of Scottish pupils get less than full-time education? Do Edinburgh councillors and officials know or care about the disruption to working families that a part-time Friday causes? Or should the rest of the population persuade their employers to knock a few hours off their week, too?

It is hardly surprising that Edinburgh teachers do not welcome comment on the anomaly. They must be worried now that the new director acts where the last one failed to.
