No to weapons

I am absolutely appalled to see that the Government has issued advice to nursery teachers suggesting that boys should be allowed to play with toy weapons. Handling weapons - even in a play situation - encourages the habit of using weapons. In view of the increasing violence in our society, it is utterly irresponsible to promote such an idea.

Children should be encouraged to participate in co-operative games and learn to work for the well-being of their fellow playmates. This can be fun, release energy in a postive manner and help build a culture of peace rather than one of violence.

Ann Garrett, Convenor of Bromley Peace Council, Kent.
