Chainsaws and loud personal stereos both produce sound levels of about 120 decibels, which is close to the pain threshold. To raise awareness of such facts and the concerns that accompany them, June 7 has been declared National Noise Action Day. A related pack, Sounding Off, provides a number of issues for secondary pupils to explore. These include practical matters to investigate in maths and sciece. These will enable students to think more clearly about how sound in the wrong place or at the wrong time affects us all. Sounding Off: The Noise Pollution Education Pack produced by The National Society for Clean Air and Environmental Protection is available from NSCA, 136 North Street, Brighton, BN1 1RG.
