Journalistic cliches such as “Mums’ Army” only serve to confuse the real issue of how non-teaching staff can contribute to children’s learning.
Teaching in Concert is an excellent 29-minute video from Medway that shows how teaching assistants have taken part in a small educational revolution in two schools, Balfour Junior and Bradfields. With council support, the schools have devised their own training programmes. These enable adults with extremely varied backgrounds in employment and qualifications to work at their full potential. In doing so, they help children to do the same.
