Not all are ‘vague about responsibilities’

The generalisations arising from the reports submitted to the School Teachers’ Review Body (TES, November 1) disappointed me, as chairman of governors of a local school.

The National Association of Governors and Managers says governors are too vague about their responsibilities. This is not my experience and I suggest the reason is partly because of the excellent governor training facilities that exist in my area. Perhaps the NAGM should have attempted to correlate its conclusions with the amount of training being undertaken.

The OFSTED report on assessing headteachers’ salaries warns the review body that governors are incapable of assessing performance for pay purposes. I know that many contributors to The TES express similar views but I findthe assertion provocative and insulting.
