Latin may well provide access to Nicholas Tate’s culture. Many children within the school system do not share Mr Tate’s cultural origins and equality of opportunity would suggest the introduction of many other languages to the curriculum if all our children are to have access to their home culture.

Children are consumers and they will select from the array of cultural delights which are part of everyday life. The curriculum experienced at school, the whole curriculum, should enable children to have knowledge and understanding of a range of cultures and equip them with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be discriminating (not discriminatory) in their choices.

It is regrettable that the chief executive of SCAA takes such a myopic view of the curriculum.
